Cosplay Competion, Matsuri Festival AZ
« on: February 24, 2008, 05:21:29 pm »
Yesterday I attended the cosplay competition at the Matsuri Festival in Pheonix, AZ. The festival was for the Japanese culture, so the focus was not solely on anime and manga. This did not stop the cosplayers to come out in force though, as vega480 can to attest too here.
Hey buddy, you may be in the picture with them, but just wanted to point out they're staring at me.

The competition they held was great. Which I was glad for, because last years sucked hard core. The announcer was good and was having a good time with the contestants and the crowd. A few of the contestants gave us a little show. Like, there was a Jack Sparrow who did a REALLY good impression. The funniest thing I've seen and heard is Jack Sparrow doing a stand up about the other cosplayers on stage with him. He had some great lines that the die hard otakus would get and other stuff for the common festival goer. The competition was ended with the cosplayers doing the Macarena. Fun times.

Here is a few of the images from the competition:

During the voting of this competition a thought struck me and its led me to another poll question. Who should you vote for in a cosplay competition?

As you should be. Though I am surprised that Vega isn't next to the pink hair nurse. I could have sworn he preferred the pink hair anime characters.

I was surprised at how many people dressed up that day and did not enter the cosplay competition. Now that's hardcore to dress up just to come out and show it off with out showing it off. There was even one person who dressed up handing out flyers for a upcoming convention for anime, might have to look into that Con even more. Will have to see how my funds are after Disneyland, where cosplay is taken to another level, and a paid gig at that. Might have to look into a father daughter cosplay costume for the upcoming con, that would be cool.

Any suggestions on that would be cool, I know I could get her to dress up as Hello Kitty, but that would leave me as nothing good to go with it.

Yay! Its that time of the year again, Matsuri is back! Feb 21st 2009.
Looking forward to the Cosplay again, maybe catch more of the sword demo, and try some more unagi (eel).

Check their site for what they had last year, they have not updated for what they will be having this year, I only assume mostly the same stuff, just different timetable. Its free to get in, some areas you have to pay for parking, and pay for food / items.

Good ol' Matsuri. It was good again this year. The cosplay competition was not quite up to par from last year. Seemed like they rushed thru getting everyone across the stage and then didn't know what to do with them. I had to laugh at the people I was standing next too. They didn't know what to make of this spectral before them but they were drawn  into it. Then one final note is the food was GREAT!!!

Here are some from this years AZ Matsuri, there were about 25 total this year, but they rushed them so fast most pics were just them walking across the stage and can not really see them well.

I put them behind a Spoiler button so they don't load and make the thread super long.
